If you’re up for a short drive, visit Peggy’s Cove,
population 54, which is 27 miles southwest of Halifax. This small,
picturesque village is nestled in a harbor where lobster fishermen
make their living. Known as the idyllic fishing village, Peggy's
Cove is one of most popular stops in Atlantic Canada. Set on rocky
shores, the village at Peggy's Cove is a photographer's paradise.
Officially known as the Peggy's Point Lighthouse, this beacon
is quite possibly the most photographed lighthouse in the world.
It marks the entrance to St. Margaret's bay and once guided seafarers
as far back as 1868. This icon has since been retired as a lighthouse
and now acts as a post office, complete with its own specialized
stamps. Despite its popularity, this tiny fishing village has
been able keep the same relaxed atmosphere that has made it famous.
St. John’s Anglican Church at Peggy’s Cove features
two murals painted by the late William deGarthe, one of Canada’s
foremost artists. Another point of interest near Peggy’s
Cove is the SwissAir Flight 111 Memorial Whalesback.
This memorial is dedicated to the 229 individuals who lost their
lives in the Swiss Air crash of September 2, 1998. The site, which
looks out to the original crash site and the other memorial at
Bayswater, has an engraved stone monument at which visitors can
pay their respects.
The memorial is located on the west side of Highway 333.
