St. Paul’s Church, located along Barrington Street, is
the oldest Protestant church in Canada and holds the title of
the very first church in the city of Halifax. History tells us
that Governor Edward Cornwallis and 2500 settlers founded Halifax
in 1749; they built this church the year after they arrived. Did
you ever think a broken window could be a tourist attraction?
Hundreds of years later, during the 1917 harbor explosion that
destroyed a large portion of the city, the “explosion window”
was added as a feature of St. Paul’s Church. The third window
of the upper gallery (along the Argyle Street side) was shattered,
leaving the silhouette of a human head!
Inside, on the north end, a piece of metal is embedded in the
wall. That piece of metal is a fragment of the Mont Blanc,
one of the two ships whose collision caused the explosion.
Free tours are available on a daily basis during the summer.
