Pier 21 could be compared to the U.S.’s “Ellis Island” where more than a million refugees, returning troop ships, war brides, wartime evacuees and immigrants and took their first steps on Canadian soil between 1928 and 1971. Pier 21 was opened July 1, 1999, in recognition of the significant role that Pier 21 played in the history of Canada and to pay tribute to those who passed through the doors.
The museum allows you to feel the immigrant experience, re-created through live performances, multimedia presentations and displays of photographs, document and artifacts. Oceans of Hope” is a 24-minute virtual projection presentation that portrays the emotional stories of those who passed through Pier 21. When you visit, don’t miss the Wall of Ships, Immigrant Testimonial Stations and the Wall of Honor.
